Can I soak mussels overnight?

I want to soak them to have them purge the sand, etc, but I don't want to wait an hour or whatever the night of cooking. It would be good to have them ready when I come home from work. Seems kind of weird to ask, considering this question is basically asking if they will drown overnight in the fridge.. :)
