Is it normal that my cat tries to lick my mouth while I'm asleep?

I wake up every night at least 3 times to my cat licking my mouth. Is this normal? It smells terrible and my boyfriend won't kiss me in the morning. How can I get my cat to stop doing this? If I can't get him to stop what can I feed him to make his breath smell better while he licks my mouth? Mussels with dinner sauce is too smelly.
